Data Synthesis and Presentation: Cell Phone Symphony
This booklet is an exploration of what a visual companion piece to Golan Levin’s ‘Cell Phone Symphony’ would look like.
To create the piece, I used my own phone numbers, past and present, to create the block of phone numbers. I start off by plotting the phone numbers in a line graph, removing the lines, and using just the points representing the phone number. I then assigned each number a position and a color. I start with one phone number, then start adding more numbers, and combine them in different repeating patterns. The result is a piece that is both visually intricate and makes an interesting companion to the performance.
For those unfamiliar with the piece, Levin used the cell phones of audience members as instruments in a musical piece. You can view more information on the performance in this article: http://www.newmusicbox.org/articles/Composer-Calling-Cell-Phone-Symphony-Premieres/
